Why We’ve Chosen to Invest in Swimming Lessons for Our Son

Water has always been a huge part of our lives.
My husband grew up kayaking on rivers across the UK and later paddling white water across Europe. My childhood was spent sailing on the Solent and the Thames, with happy memories of helping at locks, coiling ropes and spending long summer days by the water.
Now, as a family, we enjoy lots of outdoor adventures together. Many of those involve water such as paddle boarding, sailing, and spending time by rivers, lakes and the sea.
So when our little boy Orin was born in March 2025, we knew one thing straight away, we
wanted him to grow up feeling comfortable, confident and happy around water too. We
wanted to continue the activities we loved before becoming parents, but so we could enjoy them together as a family. That’s why swimming lessons were something we decided to prioritise early.
Starting Early
Orin started swimming lessons with The Little Swim Company when he was just 10 weeks old.
Even at such a young age, the benefits have been amazing to see. He already enjoys being in the water and is incredibly relaxed and happy in the pool. For us, swimming lessons are about much more than a weekly activity, they’re an investment in his future.
Confidence Starts in the Water
When children grow up around water, in pools, lakes, rivers and at the seaside, they develop a calm and capable confidence. They learn how water behaves and how their body moves within it.
Swimming lessons provide a safe, structured way for children to begin understanding water from an early age. And it all starts with fun. Chasing rubber ducks, trotting around on pool noodle horses, and singing Row, Row, Row Your Boat together on the big float might look like simple games, but they are actually building confidence.
Each term we watch Orin develop new skills, but most importantly we see him enjoying
himself.
When children feel safe and happy in the water, learning comes naturally.
Learning to Respect Water
As much as we love being around water, we are also very aware that it must always be
respected.
Even calm water, canals, shallow rivers or the seaside can carry risks.
Swimming lessons help children develop awareness, control and understanding of water
from a young age. Over time they learn skills that could one day help keep them safe. As a parent, that knowledge is incredibly important for us.
Confidence for Parents Too
One thing we didn’t fully expect was how much confidence the lessons would give us as
parents.
Learning the correct safety holds, understanding how to read Orin’s reactions in the water, and seeing him comfortably submerge and move through the water has given us huge reassurance.
Instead of feeling nervous around water with a baby, we feel equipped and prepared.
An Investment in the Future
Swimming is a life skill. It opens the door to so many experiences, holidays by the sea, time on boats, water sports, outdoor adventures and simple family fun at the pool.
By introducing Orin to water early, we hope he grows up feeling capable, calm and strong in it.
Swimming lessons means we can continue doing the things we love, this time with Orin right there alongside us!
